The Challenge.
I was asked by a member of Promenade – a partner of b-side, to create a digital illustration of Portland in Dorset. This illustration would be one side of a zine that folded out to see the whole map, which included all sorts of popular Portland landmarks.
The deadline was tight but I was delighted to accept such a fun project on behalf of my local community.
The Solution.
The map I created was A3 size with a slight hand-drawn and flexible feel to the style. I made sure the colours used stood out, using a vibrant but sensible green to stand out from the blue sea background.
I used a range of chalk and grunge brushed across the illustration which added character and some depth to the green of the land and trees. Basic shadows were also added to bring some life to the individual landmarks.
Just under 40 different landmarks were added including main areas of Portland and some individual illustrations to help specific landmarks to stand out.
The map was sent to the printers within 5 days, ready to be printed and folded into a zine for the b-side festival.
